Olsztyn trough the eyes of teenagers and senior citizens.

The aim of this report is to summarise the results of the survey about preferences for the following topics: public transport, entertainment and shopping. The report is based on a sample of ten youths and ten senior citizens over the age of 45. Both groups live in Olsztyn.

Olsztyn is the administrative capital of the Province of Warmia and Mazury. It is beautifully situated in the region of hundreds of lakes and natural forests barely touched by man. Concerning the population of the city and the number of university students Olsztyn can be called a university town

PUBLIC TRANSPORT

The majority of young people always use the cheapest possible form of transport - namely buses. They have easy access to local bus service and lower fares for students. Whereas Olsztyn's older inhabitants do not often use public transport because they prefer to travel to work by car. Cars are very comfortable but unfortunately most city dwellers have bought a second-hand car so they were found to be the main source of pollution in the local area.

ENTERTAINMENT

The town offers for adults sophisticated entertainment like theatre and cinemas. The Museum of Warmia and Mazury provides numerous archaeological and ethnographic exhibitions. Other monuments of great historical value are the Upper Gate and Cathedral Church, both erected in the 14th century. However, youths prefer a completely different way of entertainment with just going clubbing as often as possible.

SHOPPING

Olsztyn offers a wide range of shopping facilities for almost every age group. The latest results of the survey show that both sample groups answered in a very similar way. Both are satisfied with having the possibility to do their shopping in the department stores such as 'Alfa' and 'Dukat'. Also both groups prefer cheap and well-equipped supermarkets than small retail shops.

In conclusion I can add that Olsztyn at present is considered to be a good place for living as well as working. Commuters have a very efficient traffic system and a safe and clean environment. Young people never got bored because of many interesting shopping and entertainment facilities. As I see it now nothing should be changed in the city.
