The graphs below show the number of visits to and from the UK between 1979 and 1999, and some destinations of UK citizens travelling abroad.
One of the graphs shows the number of visits to and from the UK spanning the time from 1979 to 1999. The other graph depicts six holiday destinations UK citizens used to choose in years 1979 and 1999.
Basing on the first graph the trend of UK citizens visiting countries outside their own had risen from 17 millions visits to 55 millions. While the number of visits abroad had been continuously rising, the number of visits to UK by overseas residents remained constant from 1995 to 1999. Judging from the graph showing holiday destinations of UK citizens, the most popular over the whole period was Spain with almost 4.5 millions visits. It can be observed that Ireland is the only place included in the graph that the interest in has fallen about a half after 20 years.
The figures show a significant change in the number of times West Indies and Thailand had been chosen as a holiday destination by UK citizens.
