Mountain rescue pair survived 100m fall as they were swept down a mountain by an avalanche trying to rescue irresponsible tourist yesterday. It was a really blizzardy and fairy cold day. They received an emergency call, and notwithstanding dangerous conditions they decided to risk their lifes and to go to bring help. They were climbing in Wielkie Doliny when in a split second, a giant slab of snow fractured in front of two of them and they were engulfed by a wall of snow in a gully on Piekna Góra at around midday. They came off from the climbing ropes and tumbled down the rocky slope and came to rest at the foot of Dolna Góra.

Paweł Nowak, 46, from Przodkowo, and his partner, Piotr Kowalski, 28, from Gdynia, were last night recovering in Gdansk Hospital. Mr Nowak has serious ankle injuries and his partner is suffering from leg injuries. Last night they were said to be in a stable condition, but were unwilling to talk about their narrow escape.

All of them had known that the Grade 4 avalanche warning in the Wielkie Doliny area yesterday had been announced. Rescuers said the pair had done everything by the book, choosing a route up the mountain to minimise the risk. (135)
The drama unfolded in front of Piekne Doliny where Rescue Team member Marek Tolek phoned team leader Jan Piekalski, who launched an immediate rescue effort. A helicopter from Rębiechowo Airport was scrambled but could not reach the casualties because of the low cloud.
Mr Tolek scrambled up the slope and administered first aid to two injuried rescuers – moving them to a safe area because he feared further avalanches. (182) He said last night: "I was clearly concerned for their lives. I saw them tumble down the mountainside. The next thing I saw was one of them standing up but there was no sign of the other one. "They were reasonably cheerful considering what they had just been through. "They were very relieved to be alive." (226)

As Mr Tolek kept the injured pair warm and safe, other rescuers made their way up the mountain. They stretchered the injured men to a lower plateau from where the helicopter airlifted them to hospital at about 2pm.
