Dear Sirs,

I am writing to express my opinion and comment on the article about building a large shopping complex near our town published in one of your latest issues.

Although it is a fact that such an investment will result in considerable profits for the area, such as decrease the unemployment and it will attract a lot of people, there are also very alarming drawbacks. The first of them is the one concerning the building site chosen, as it is an inhabited area. Local residents will have to be relocated but this raises a quite obvious question - where?
Moreover, a centre consisting of many various shops, restaurants and leisure facilities is a potential threat to the local shops. I am afraid that people having everything they need under one roof will choose to go to the centre instead of making quite a walk from one shop to another around the city. On the other hand they might also appreciate the nearness of local shops if they forget to buy some necessary household objects or food.
Another problem is the one of pollution. I have ambivalent feelings about the new roads and rail links which will have to be build because as well as improving communication around the area they will also cause noticeable amount of pollution resulting from the increase in the traffic and the noise will most probably reach a disturbing level.

To sum up, having taken into account the profits which will result from building a new shopping centre might make, there are issues like: the place where local residents should be relocated, the noise and pollution levels resulting from new roads and the effect which would building the centre have on local shops which should be reconsidered. I am looking forward to seeing my letter published in your next issue.

Yours faithfully,
