Getting a job

Those students who want to find a job in Britain must look for it in the local papers or magazines in the ?Situations Vacant? columns. These small ads are tremendously useful for the community as they usually offer a great variety of jobs. There are also Job Centers and private employment organizations which usually have a god selection of positions available including contracts, transfers and good prospects. However, their services are not free.
The most popular occupation is that of a shop-assistant. One can find a full or part-time job at the chemist?s, in a coffee shop or supermarket. Many people are required to work as typists, clerks, secretaries or book-keepers in offices, companies and agencies. Employers often demand high qualifications from their workers. They want to have the right people in the right places and that is why they take the advice of an interviewer who helps choose the best candidates. The most esquired qualities are experience, energy, initiative, talent and responsibility. In return the employers offer good, sometimes negotiable salaries, good working conditions, longer holidays and additional leave at bank holidays, discounts of various kinds, commissions, lunch vouchers, annual bonuses or travel schemes for commuters. They also promise good prospects and opportunities for promotion.
Many students in Britain take after-school jobs. They usually work part-time at weekends or after school t fast-food restaurants, baby-sit for neighbors, hold delivery jobs o work in stores.
Many young people also volunteer to help take care of the elderly, the handicapped and hospital patients. Others help clean up the natural environment.
Before starting a job, it is sometimes necessary to vocational courses that prepare students to perform specific jobs, such as that of a carpenter or car mechanic.
The best thing is to apply for an interesting and satisfying job which matches both professional and personal interests. Only in that case is success guaranteed.
