„The Most Holy Republica*” by Jacek Piekara

“The Most Holy Republica” ( “Przenajświętsza Rzeczposoplita” ) is a brillant book written by one of the most popular Polish fantasy writers – Jacek Piekara. The story is set in Poland I the year 2040. This fascinating book tells a story of various people living in Warsaw. They live different lives and live in different worlds. But Piekara’s book shows terrifing, brutal and tragic vision of future Poland, where the main power is the Catholic Church.
The plot focuses on Almaryk Dymała – an office-worker working for the Catholic Church. But we meet a senator, a primas of Poland and a lot of ordinary, poor people too.
The story begins, when Dymała gets a position of an officer of Church. It’s a high social position and a rank in a career ladder. But with the position come problems. How will Dymała manage in a world, where the head of Pope decorates the wall of the prince of Sudan’s hause? Where in the Notre Deame mosque the muezzinis are calling for believers to pray? Where last Jewishes were burned at the stadium in Hajfa? Where the favourite food of Moscow’s mafia-bosses are the brains of still alive babies?
“The Most Holy Repubica” became my Bible the moment I read it. Not only excellent intrigue, dramatic events and surprising plot twists make this book unique. Unique is, full of bitter love, feeling with which the author is writing about the history and future of his own country, too.
The book was written in 2004, but what shocked me the most, when I was reading it in January of 2006, was that the facts from Piekara’s book were becoming, one by one, the reality! It was like reading a phropecy! Horrible phropecy, which I was terrifed to see as a reality.
“The most Holy Republica” is a must! It has a fantastic story, a surprising end and bitter-sweet feelings. It’s thrilling and shocking, but shows what can be in the future if we don’t start to think before we vote. Comparing to Piekara’s book, the Orwell’s vision in “1984” could be a Paradise. But “The Most Holy Republica” is a red light for all of us. Even if you don’t like political books you just MUST read this one!

* Taka odmiana “holy” zastosowana jest celowo. „The most holy” zamiast „holiest” podkreśla świętość :)
