Superstitions are the belief that particular events, rituals, actions and objects bring good or bad luck. Most cultures have their own superstitions. In Poland many people are superstitious about the number 13, especially of Friday 13th, black cats or breaking mirrors. They have some lucky charms too. When they see a chimney-sweep in the street, they catch to bottom, because they think that they will have good luck. The most popular superstitions is that when the black cat across your way, you will have a bad luck. The same happens when you break mirrors, then you will have been unhappy for 7 years. Some people think that if you put a hat on a bed you’ll have bad luck.

People also believe of the magic power of lucky objects such as a horse shoes, elephants with raise trunk or a four-leaf clover. Many superstitious people wear talismans, carry lucky stones to chose away evil spirits. Students often bring their lucky pens or favorite toys to exams and brides wear something blue, new, old and borrowed from happily married women for the weeding ceremony. Secondary school leavers wears red underwear on traditionally ball which is organized a hundred days before final exams, next they must wear it on the exam. The other superstition in British culture is that you should never say the name Macbeth in the theatre because it will bring you something bad.
When you promise something you’re not going to do you must cross your fingers and don’t have to keep the promises. If we don’t want to put a jinx something bad happened we must three times knocked. We shouldn’t start our day with left leg, because it bring us bad mood.
Some people believe in horoscopes. They often read it to learn what might happen to them in the future.

The belief in “hocus pocus” may seems funny, it isn’t complete nonsense. I makes people feel more self-confident and safe, gives them hope and offers he illusions that they can control their lives not only at the present moment but also in the future.

I’m realistic and I think that our life depends on our decisions. Everything that could happen can be controlled by us. I treat some superstitions with a smile and I don’t believe in these kind of things.
