"Hair''- a review of a film

The film „Hair” is directed by Milos Forman who was nominated for Cesar Award for his work. It’s an adaptation of the Broadway musical of the same title. The author of music is James Rado. The script is a creation of Michael Weller. World premiere took place in 1979. The main characters are played by John Savage, Treat Williams and Beverly D’Angelo.
Claude Bukowski who is an young man from Oklahoma arrives to New York with the aim of joining army and going on the war with Vietnam. He meets a group of hippies. He is impressed by their lifestyle and in a short period of time he becomes their friend. Claude falls in love with Sheila- a girl from a snobbish and well-of family. But for young idealist the duty is more important. He is trained in the army before going on the war. Berger and friends arrives to Nevada and wants to meet Claude. Irresponsible Berger makes a decision that is tragic for him.
It’s easy to point out both advantages and disadvantages of “Hair”. I have to admit that inventive choreography and well technically dancers were illustrating what is going on in the film in a very valid way. The scenes with elements of dancing were glorious. They made the film more vivid and more interesting. Also the ending was great and touching. It bears witness to excellence of all composition of the film. Final events were totally unpredictable and also untypically created. I must mention about the message of the musical too. It’s absolutely universal- the film shows the strength of friendship and brutality of war.
“Hair” has also some defects. The first is glorification of drugs. One of the main characters takes LSD. It is shown how beautiful is his world after it. The next disadvantage is the fact that the film is too long. The plot is not very extended but really stretched in time. What’s more, there is too much singing. Of course it’s a musical but too long songs disturb the action in some moments.
In spite of some defects, the film is worth watching. It’s a real lesson of friendship. Amazing choreography and dialogues varies the plot and every spectator should see it. The musical is intended only for adults. Both effects and the message are stunning. Of course after watching everyone can create own opinion. My opinion about has already existed- this is fantastic creation! I encourage everyone to get it across.
