TEMAT: Common stereotypes of Polish people - truth or exaggeration?

By the word "stereotype" we understand generalizations about a person, group of people, nation etc. We develop stereotypes when we are unable or unwilling to obtain all of the information we would need to make fair judgments about people or situations. We don't know many things, so we create our own image - often inadequate and unfair.

Our nation, is often seen in that way. Americans laugh at so called 'Polish jokes' which create a stereotypical image of Polish nation as such. Is that really true? Are we just as in that jokes?

First of all, I disagree with people who associate Poles with endless alcohol problems. Some time ago, that image was more conjoined with Russians, but now more common is to say so about Polish as well. Polish people aren't such a drunkards - at least not all of them. Of course, it cannot be said that they don't drink alcohol at all. Anyway, it's very easy to get to extremes.

What is more, some people say 'Go to Poland, your car is already there'. This statement clearly makes us thieves who will steal everything that can be stolen. Unfortunately, I must agree that some notorious events could make others think so, but it's not true. It's completely unfair that actions of one person become parts of nation's general behaviour.

On the other hand, few people perceive that Polish people have manv positive features. In many parts of our history we proved that we are able to unite and face danger all together. Not only are Polish loyal workers, but also their work is robust and appreciated by others. It's a pity that everyone notice all the worst.

To sum up, we should think twice before judging somebody after external features. It only shows our ignorance and even foolishness. Maybe it's worth thinking how we would feel if someone said such things about us? Is it really pleasant?
