PAST SIMPLE

(I,you,she,he,it,we,they) verb+ed*

Positive Negative
I arrived yesterday. I did not (didn't) arrive yesterday.
He/She/It arrived yesterday. He/She/It did not (didn't) arrive yesterday.
We/You/They arrived yesterday. We/You/They did not (didn't) arrive yesterday.

Questions Short answers
Did I arrive yesterday? Yes, I did. // Not, I didn't.
Did he/she/it arrive yesterday? Yes, he/she/it did. // Not, he/she/it didn't.
Did you/we/they arrive yesterday? Yes, we/you/they did. // Not, we/you/they didn't.

When do we use Past Simple?
- To talk about a completed action in the past.
- To talk about a habit or repeated action in the past


Examples of time expressions used with the Past Simple: last week, last month, last year, 2 years ago, in 1996.

* There are many irregular verbs!


PAST CONTINUOUS

When do we use Past Continuous?
- To express a past activity that lasted for a period of time
- To express an action that is interrupted in the past
