Most people known the book „THE LAST OF THE MOHICANS” but not many people can tell you about the man who wrote them. His name was James Fenimore Cooper.

He wrote some thirty exciting stories of the forest and the sea, was one of the greatest early American writers.

He was born in Burlington, New Jersey, on September 15, 1789. He was the eleventh chlild of the family of twelve children. He was a very young chils when his family moved to
the wilderness in the still undeveloped part of the State of New York. There, on Otsego Lake his father begining the historical colony of Cooperstown. When James was a boy, he play into the mysterious forest which was full of animals and Indians.

He spend three years in Yale College and at the age of sixteen he went into the United States Navy. After three exciting years he came back to Cooperstown to continue the life of a farmer.

In 1811 he married a wealthy women- Susan the Lancey. The first of Cooper's books “Precaution” was not a success, but his second “the Spy” was a patriotic story of the American Revolution and it brought him world fame. Easy to translate, Cooper`s works brought him great popularity in the world.

In 1826 Cooper went with his family to Europe where he stayed six years continuing his writing.He live in Paris. He was in contact with literary men. He knew Walter Scott very well and in 1830 he met Mickiewicz with whom he often enjoyed long horse- riding trips.

James Fenimore Cooper is the author of books such us: “Leatherstocking Tales” (“The Deerslayer” is the first of the five books of “Leatherstocking Tales”), “The Pilot”, “The Pirates”, “The Red Rover”.

Until Cooper`s death on September 14, 1851, the great novelist`s pen was never idle*. He will long live in the memory of people over the whole world, for readers-both young and old-always enjoy good exciting romance and adventure.
